Speech Services Under IDEA

Why the Minutes Can't Wait

Speech or language impairment is one of the disability categories in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and speech-language pathology is one of IDEA's related services. Depending on your state, speech therapy is either a student's special education service itself or a related service that supports it. Either way, it's written into the IEP and must be delivered.

The IEP sets the minutes, how often and where. Evaluations run on legal timelines — 60 days from parental consent under IDEA, or your state's timeline — students are re-evaluated at least every three years, and the IEP is reviewed at least once a year.

When the SLP seat is empty, the minutes still come due. Missed sessions can mean make-up (compensatory) services, parent complaints and state findings — which is why districts staff SLPs on contract the moment a seat opens.

Onsite or Teletherapy?

Pick the Delivery That Fits the Caseload

Many districts use both: an onsite SLP for the youngest and highest-need students, teletherapy for the rest. Your IEP team decides what fits each student.

Onsite SLPs

Best when the work is hands-on or the students are young.

  • Preschool and early childhood caseloads
  • Students with significant needs, or who can't yet work with a screen
  • AAC device setup and hands-on training for staff
  • Districts with SLPs living within driving distance

Teletherapy SLPs

Best when no one local can be found — licensed in your state, live by video.

  • Small and rural districts with no SLP within driving distance
  • Bilingual SLPs in languages you can't find locally
  • Articulation, language and fluency caseloads spread across campuses
  • Coverage while you recruit onsite — or for the whole school year

From Clinical Fellow to CCC-SLP

The Path to Certification — and Why It Helps You Hire

1

Graduate Degree

A master's or doctoral degree in speech-language pathology from a program accredited by ASHA's Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA).

2

Praxis Exam

A passing score on the Praxis exam in speech-language pathology, before or during the fellowship.

3

Clinical Fellowship

At least 36 weeks of full-time work (1,260 hours), or the part-time equivalent, mentored by an SLP who holds the CCC. Most states issue a provisional license for this year.

4

CCC-SLP & Full License

ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence, then your state's full license — plus any school credential your state's education agency requires.

For Your District

Grow your own SLPs

A clinical fellow can fill your seat this year and become a CCC-SLP who stays. SLP assistants follow a separate path: their own training and, where they choose, ASHA's assistant certification (C-SLPA), working under an SLP's supervision as your state allows. Clinical fellow staffing →

Speech-Language Pathologist — your questions, answered before the first call

We build every questionnaire with your input. For this search it might look like this — and every résumé arrives with the candidate's answers.

  • Is your ASHA CCC current, and which state license or school credential do you hold?
  • What caseload size and ages have you carried — preschool, elementary, secondary?
  • Have you evaluated and treated in Spanish or another language?
  • Have you used AAC devices with students, and which systems?

Common Questions

What Districts Ask Us

Can you place bilingual SLPs?
Yes. Tell us the language and how many students need evaluations or therapy, and we'll look for SLPs who evaluate and treat in it.
Do you place SLP assistants?
Yes. SLPAs stretch your SLPs further. We confirm the supervision your state requires is in place before they start.
What's the difference between a CCC-SLP and a clinical fellow?
A CCC-SLP holds ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence. A clinical fellow has finished the graduate degree and is completing the supervised fellowship that leads to it, mentored by a CCC-SLP. Both can carry a school caseload; a fellow needs that mentoring in place.
How many students can one SLP serve?
It depends on your state and your students. Some states cap school SLP caseloads in law or regulation, and ASHA recommends sizing the work by workload rather than a single number. Tell us your caseload and we'll size the contract — full-time, part-time, or split between onsite and teletherapy.
How fast can you send candidates?
We send a blinded shortlist of screened candidates within 48 to 72 hours of your request — credentials checked and your screening questions answered.
How does contract staffing work?
Your clinician or teacher works on MedPoint's payroll for the school year, the semester or a set number of weeks. We handle weekly payroll, taxes and workers' comp, and you get one invoice at the agreed rate. If you want to keep them, contract-to-hire and direct hire are available.
What does a blinded candidate mean?
A blinded profile shows a candidate's credentials, experience and location — but no name, employer or school. When you ask for the introduction, we set it up.
